Under the guidance of Professor Anthony F. Sky at Lawrence Technological University, (Southfield, MI) I began an independent research project aimed at developing an economical synthesis of bisphenol A dimethacrylate (Scheme 1).

Ultimately the procedure was developed as a large-scale experiment for organic and synthesis labs, which in turn would supply general chemistry with a reagent used during the introduction of students to polymer chemistry (Scheme 2). This method to make bisphenol A dimethacrylate reduced the cost of reagent from over $1.50/gram to under $0.30/gram.
